Section 1 - Body Organization and Homeostasis
To begin the Human Body Unit Students will first identify the levels of organization in the body. This starts with a cell, many cells make a tissue, different tissues make up an organ, and many organs create organ systems. Students will also look at the various ways the human body maintains homeostasis to keep an internal balance.
Section 2 - The Skeletal System
Students will identify the functions of the skeleton. Students will be able to explain the role that joints play in the body. Students will also be able to describe the characteristics of bone and how to keep bones strong and healthy. Students will identify many bones as well as the major groups of bones throughout the body. Students will be tested on identification as well as spelling of the scientific names of the bones.
Section 3 - The Muscular System
Students will identify the types of muscles found in the body. Students will be able to explain why skeletal muscle works in pairs. Students will be tested on identification of the major muscles and groups of muscles throughout the body.
Section 4 - The Skin
Students will describe the functions and the structures of the skin.
Unit Project - Body Systems Project
In groups of four to five students will select and research the functions and anatomy of one of the following body systems: The Digestive System, Circulatory System, Respiratory System, Excretory System, Nervous System, and Endocrine System.
Human Development Project
Students will work in groups of four to five to create a "Baby Book" of the stages of human development from zygote to Adulthood.
Dill Pickle Autopsy
To practice identifying anatomical terms of body position students will dissect a dill pickle.
Fetal Pig Dissection
To explore and compare the anatomy of humans, students will dissect a fetal pig with a partner of their choice.
