6th Week 4: April 15th - April 21st

Hello 6th Graders!!,

Please print the week 4 science attachment from the Wednesday email.

This week we will begin Investigation 3 - Cells! Get ready to observe some cool organisms under the microscope!!

Day 1: Wednesday, April 15th -
Begin on page 2: Answer the question, what is the 9th characteristic of life?
(We will answer the LOL Later...)

Turn to page 4 -
Brine Shrimp Observations:

Watch my microscope YouTube video to follow along with page 4:
https://youtu.be/vRRXCUJ1mP4

Fill out the evidence of life sheet (page 3) for the brine shrimp.  Give an example for any box you check.

Day 2: Thursday, April 16th -
Begin on page 5.

Elodea Observations:

Watch my microscope YouTube video to follow along with page 5:
 https://youtu.be/60bV1u80Zjw

Fill out the evidence of life sheet, page 3 for the elodea plant.  Give an example for any box you check.

Day 3: Friday, April 17th -
Begin on page 6

Paramecia Observations:

Watch my microscope YouTube video to follow along with page 6:
https://youtu.be/-aQwBJDsGuY

Fill out the evidence of life sheet, page 3 for the paramecia.  Give an example for any box you check.

Day 4: Monday, April 20th -
Complete page 7 the plant cell, and page 8 the paramecia cell.

Use the word bank below to help you fill in the definitions for plant cell parts:
  • Stores water and other substances; provides structure and support for the plant cell.
  • Internal fluid that contains the cell structures.
  • A rigid layer that supports the cell and provides shape.
  • Converts the energy in food into usable energy for the cell.
  • Converts the Sun's energy into food(sugars) for the cell.
  • Contains the cell's genetic material (DNA) which determines the nature of the cell structures and substances.
  • Cell boundary that controls what enters and leaves the cell.
  • Makes proteins, (Found either free or connected to the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum).
  • A membranous structure that assembles proteins and parts of the cell membrane.

Use the word bank below to help fill in the vocabulary for the paramecium:
  • Food Vacuole
  • Nucleus
  • Cell Membrane
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Mitochondrion
  • Contractile Vacuole
  • Ribosome
  • Lysosome
  • Cytoplasm
(We will correct vocabulary on pages 7 and 8 during our Zoom meeting Wednesday!!)

Day 5: Tuesday, April 21st  -
1. Read the article - "The Amazing Paramecium!", complete page 13 as you read.

2. Complete page 14. List as many similarities and differences of the elodea and paramecium.
(We will correct this together during our Zoom meeting Wednesday!!)
