Please find the hard copy packet for Investigation 1-What is Life? In your bag picked up from school Wednesday afternoon, or print the file attached from the email Mrs. DiIulio and Mrs. McCabe sent this morning.
We will be starting our last unit, Diversity of Life - Biology!! Our 1st investigation looks at how we can define life and living things! We will understand how to determine if something is living, and what separates something as nonliving.
Day One -
Begin on page 2, answer the question... How do you know if something is living? Do living things have certain characteristics? (We will complete the "LOL' next week.)
Turn to page 4, watch the following video!
Record any 3 observations of the unknown objects, record any evidence of life you believe you saw!
Turn to page 5, Living/Nonliving Card Sort. Place a check for each card
L = Living
NL = Nonliving
U = Undecided/Unsure
Not sure what an amoeba is?? Check out a picture of each piece to identify.
Day Two -
Looking at page 6, 7, and 8: We have 5 materials we will be observing for evidence of life. We will add each of the 5 materials to 3 different solutions and observe them after 10 miuntes, 24 hours, and a few days to note any differences.
View the following two videos:
-First day-dry observations.
and
-Changes observed after 10 minutes.
Day Three -
Read the article Characteristics of Life on Earth, pages 9-13. Answer the article questions on page 14.
Day Four -
Complete Investigation 1 Vocabulary, page 3. Use the article on pages 9-13 and Google to help you define.
Complete page 16-Life Processes. There may be more than one correct answer.
Day Five -
Head outside on a nature walk! See how many LIVING things you can find, then explain the 8 characteristics of life.... what 5 basic things does the living thing need, what are 3 functions of the that living thing?
